Last Week/this week

Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting Ms. Mason’s lab! She seems to be doing some super awesome research with her lab mentors, as they are using electricity to improve the efficiency and quality of our drinking water! I most definitely look forward to seeing how this all turns out!

This Past Week:

This past week, I have been able to finally my head around different imperative statistical python analysis that I will be implementing into my project such as :

Linear Regression

Logistic Regression

As Well As KMeans Clustering
Looking Forward to Implementing these Methods in my Research!

Python PYTHON PYTHON

This past week, I have been emercing myself in the inner workings of coding in Python, and how it will add value to my research on Antimicrobial Peptides (AMPs). Using the Database of Antimicrobial Activity and Structure of Peptides (DBAASP), I am able to create my own database, for my further analysis of AMPs that have been observed in the past!

My goal in learning Python is to go through hundreds of AMP data in order to associate different characteristics of AMPs that would combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria! Machine learning is the future, and if we are able to predict and figure out which combination of AMPs can be used to fight bacteria, then research, like this, may be able to save millions of lives in the near future! Stay tuned for more!

Ready to GO!

Hello All!

My Name is Emanuel Byas, I am a Middle School STEM teacher, and I am super duper excited to be participating in the RICE RET Nanotechnology program this summer! I am fairly new to the STEM and technology field, as my primary background has been in geology and ocean exploration!

Dutch Harbor, Alaska
Sound Velocity Reading 10 miles off the coast of Apalachicola, Florida

Through the help of my Laboratory Instructor, Dr. Anatoly Kolomeisky, and lab mentor, Dr. Angela Medvedeva, my primary focus this summer will be to help develop a lesson plan that teaches the fundamentals of machine learning and its combined efforts with nanotechnology to combat hazardous bacteria. Even though Machine learning is outside of my expertise, I am looking forward to reviewing as much as I can, so that I may be a major asset to my research team!

The primary goals I wish to take from this whole experience are to expand my expertise in coding, to become a better leader and educator, as well as to make more friends and associates that share the same passion, that I do, for making the world a better place! I look forward to posting my journey throughout this Summer, and beyond!
